Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

If it were still the subject of "contrasts", I'd say you'd have won it with that, as there isn't really an odd one out in the picture as such.

In saying that though, it's a fantastic photograph. I'm not really as knowledgeable about photography as I'm sure most people on here would be, but I think that's a very, very thought-provoking image.

What I really love most about it is how similar the two men look. If it were a film, I'd say it'd be as if the same guy is looking at two different futures or something.

Sorry for rambling off topic, I don't think that will win the challenge, considering the topic at hand. but I honestly do think that's an amazing photograph.

Thanks - but I just see now as well that the photo has to be taken spefically for the challenge and that is not the case here - I took it in Madrid last year.

I like the one wth the 4 glasses. For me it would work better without the breadbin in the background. But that's just me!

Just interesting to note - that the out of focus flowers and the glasses in front of the bread-bin have got between them 5 votes- while my attempts between them have a eurovision type 'nul points'.

Obviously my photographic and creative talents are so short of what is required on this elite forum that there is little point in hanging around.

I will go somewhere where the standards are not so exacting(and the fellow members are a bit fairer).

Sorry you feel that way keps, I'm sure it's nothing personal.
This is not a thread to discuss the quality of members submissions, or to argue the "fairness" of the voting system. What may appeal to me, may be totally horrid to you, and visa versa.

If you wish to submit your shots, in the main forum, for C&C, I'm sure you'll get some helpful insight into peoples opinions. It can be very helpful.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,009 ✭✭✭KarmaGarda

Well seeing as C&C is encouraged in these assignment topics I'll post my thoughts:

    Wine bottles:

For me, the wine bottles over power the picture. Maybe some other detail is required, maybe not so close up, maybe not so "arranged" or "neat"

    Fruit:

In this shot I think the fruit should be the central point and in your face, but it would probably have worked better in a fruit bowl maybe, or even just "randomly" placed as opposed to organised. Just personal opinion

    Tins:

Again, the shot is just about the labels. This would probably have worked really well if they were shot while still in a cupboard, and with a lot more tins maybe.

That's my C&C, and I do mean well offering it. Sorry you're not happy about the voting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,079 ✭✭✭xia

Keps, I usually like your pictures.
But like KarmaGarda said, those were too posed for my taste. And they were too similar to each other. My understanding of these assignments is first of all practice and to change the way you look at things around you and to get creative. And if then others like and appreciate your efforts the better. Of course it's nice to get votes and even to win. But sometime things you like don't mean the same to others. I can't count the pictures I posted in a random thread because I really liked them but noone agreed. But that's a way to learn and improve as well.
I took a picture yesterday with this assignment in mind and it just didn't work for me so I didn't post it. But still I am glad I realised the situation could have been an opportunity.

One difference between the flowers and the wine-glasses on the one hand, and your 3 pictures on the other, is that the flowers and wine-glasses fit comfortably into the picture while yours are extremely tightly cropped. In my (inexperienced) opiniion, this really takes away from them.

It's a bit silly to be criticising the voting, especially after the compliments your Madrid pic got

Anyone with that amount of ammo - deserves a vote!

As you can see I liked two of them:) The first one because it took me a while to find the one (was checking the numbers first :o) and in both the symmetry. Apart from having an odd one out that makes the pictures to me.

The same theme is fine to me here as it is not as obvious and quite abstract.

First point - Take a look around the thread. Your images are not in the exclusive position (at time of writing) to not have received a vote. Don't worry - you are not alone in this.
    keps wrote: »

You really need to read a bit more around this forum. This may actually be the furthest place on the internet from being elite.

Personal point of view here - there are many images on this assignment thread (which happen to include your own) which haven't caught my imagination and I don't feel they were creative enough to warrant a vote. A few have. It doesn't mean that anyone I haven't voted on is a bad photographer or can't be creative. It just means that they haven't caught my imagination. Many of these posters may be much better photographers than me.

I've personally thought about this assignment but haven't yet come up with anything which I feel is worthy and creatively clever to represent the topic. I did think of getting two of one thing and one of another, but felt it was too drab for the theme and the theme of the assignment could/should be responded to with far more creativity. Like the contrast assignment, I may even post after the assignment is finished if I come up with something that I feel is creative enough.

I might add balance lest you feel I am having a go at you - I personally think that some of your photographs posted on the random thread are quite excellent. That isn't massaging an ego - it's simply how I feel personally. We must however respect that others may not feel like that.

The purpose of the assignments isn't purely to cream up votes (thanks), its to stretch yourself so that you will benefit. If you have benefited from your submissions on this thread then I say good on you and well done. That's the purpose of the thread. If this thread has only encouraged you to do something that you could have easily churned out before the assignment was announced then in my personal opinion it hasn't benefited you.

I really fail to see your point for fellow members being a bit fairer. In fairness to the membership of this forum, you will find some of the most helpful people that you are likely to find partaking here in this forum - unselfishly giving help to people who ask for it and even encouraging those who don't ask. They don't massage anyone's ego. You get honest opinion. If that isn't what you are looking for then perhaps this isn't the correct piece of space on the virtual landscape for you. You are of course welcome to participate on the same basis as everyone else about the place.

    Hope that helps.

    And from the other side.....

Just some C&C on this for you. I think this was definitely the best of the 3, but, a very minor adjustment I'd make, the 4 cartridges on the bottom right are slightly off putting. If you couldn't see the bottom of those it would be perfect!

Just a personal opinion, and it's very minor. ;)

  • Registered Users Posts: 46 FatimaKid

I like the way you think, pullandbang. I'd a similar creation in mind (not with shotgun cartridges) but now you've blown it away. Glad I don't have the unused cartridge to hand at the moment.

My first post on this forum and it's a moan.....but I've got to vote for the first pic.

    Eh, how do I vote?

Thanks to all who took the time to reply to my whinging post!

Of course you are all dead right and I was acting like a spoiled brat(which really I'm not). Sorry about that!

Only excusse is that I was up at 6 30 am to travel West - had a tough day's work and kinda was disappointed to see not one person liked one photo!

Maybe if I had posted this one of the bottles - it may have been a bit more viewer friendly and rest assured - I am not looking for sympathy votes- and I know I would not get them here anyway.
Maybe people would confirm that at least this is a step in the right direction.
Hope to get to Clonmacnoise for an hour after work tomorrow - so if I get any nice shots I will post them on 'random' (unless I find an o'dd one out' 9th century celtic cross!)

    Regards Keps

Yes, this is far better to my eye photographically - still not giving it the thumbs up though :p sorry.

(but only as I stated earlier the x number of one thing and a single other doesn't really do it for me on this assignment)

To me, for this assignment, there needs to be a twist to it or something that you wouldn't particularly expect to make you think - oh, that was clever. But that is only me and shouldn't influence anyone.

What I do like about your image is the perspective that you have introduced. There are many odd one's out to it also (not sure if it were intended). Black bottle / green bottle - screw on top / corked top - white wine / red wine - Chilean / Spanish(?)

Anyhow, yes better than before. And that is good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,009 ✭✭✭KarmaGarda

Yeah, I agree with The Black Kitten :D. Much improved in my eyes too, and I like the perspective you used.
